Stroke order: KanjiVG

Stroke order diagrams come from KanjiVG © Ulrich Apel, release r20260714, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0.

The diagrams are modified, both on these web pages and on the printed sheets: split into one step per stroke and recoloured, with the new stroke in red. The sheets also show the stroke numbers. You may reuse the modified diagrams under the same licence. Every printed stroke-order page carries this credit, and so does the footer of every page on this site.

Readings and kanji levels: JMdict and KANJIDIC2

Word readings, kanji school grades and old JLPT levels come from the JMdict and KANJIDIC2 files of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, used under CC BY-SA 4.0 in line with the EDRDG licence. We keep only the fields this site needs and store them as JSON. That reduced data is shared under the same licence: kanji.json, words.json and version.json.

The current data was built on 28 October 2026 from the JMdict file of 27 October 2026 and KANJIDIC2 database version 2026-300. We rebuild it from the EDRDG files about once a month. Project pages: JMdict, KANJIDIC.

Every printed reading quiz, answer key and word card page carries a line crediting JMdict, KANJIDIC2, EDRDG and the licence. The credit stays with the sheets you hand out.

Why there is no N5 to N1 setting

Since the JLPT was revised in 2010, its organisers (the Japan Foundation and JEES) have not published official kanji or vocabulary lists (JLPT FAQ, checked 22 October 2026). Masume offers three other settings instead: the old JLPT levels (4 to 1, before 2010), Japanese school grades, and your own list of known kanji.
